Frank Guide To Christmas

Australians are expected to fork out a total of around $19 million on festive fare this year[1]. It’s a solid spend, but instead of roasting your budget take a look at the quality and value of good cheer available at food markets across the nation.

Queensland: Noosa Farmers' Market

Sundays 7am-12pm, Weyba Road, Noosaville

Vegan. Organic. Paleo. Locavore. This farm-to-plate market has something for everyone. Shake off the cobwebs with an almond milk chai, then stock up on Gympie pineapples, Eumundi strawberries and bush-ripened tomatoes.  Delish!

New South Wales: Bondi Farmers Markets

Saturdays 9am-1pm, Bondi Beach Public School, Campbell Parade, Bondi

Shop between the flags for uber-organic produce and enjoy free tastings of small cow cheese, dry aged beef and handcrafted ice pops. There’s even a bag share box so there’s no excuse not to buy up big.

Victoria: Preston Market

Wed-Sat from 8am, Cnr Murray Street & Cramer Street, Preston

East meets west and everything in between – all from tram no. 86. Pick spices from Pakistan; haggle over a lobster caught that morning; grab a coffee and be surprised when you get change from $5. It’s loud, it’s lively – and it’s great value.

Tasmania:  Launceston Harvest Market

Saturdays 8.30am-12.30pm, Cimitiere St car park, Launceston

This market sets the bar high, and the seasons dictate what’s available. Treat yourself to Bruny Island oysters, hot-smoked salmon and a chaser of couverture chocolate brownies all washed down with Willie's Ferry-Aged Fuggled Porter. Yuletide doesn’t get any better.

South Australia: Adelaide Central Markets

21-23 December 7am-7pm / Christmas Eve 6am-6pm, Gouger St, Adelaide

Soak up the sights and smells of over 80 traders offering a cornucopia of festive goodies from handmade puddings to roasted porchetta. In a word…yum!

West Australia: Subiaco Farmers Market

Saturdays 8am-noon / Twilight Market 4pm – 8pm Wed 23 December, Bagot Road, Subiaco

Hightail it to Subiaco to dish up a clean, green Christmas banquet. Stock up on organic produce that lets your guests dine to their hearts content and start a health kick all at the same time.

Northern Territory:  Rapid Creek Market

Sundays 7am to 1pm, Trower Rd, Rapid Creek

Put the passport away - south east Asia is right here! Give your festive banquet an international flavour with plump jackfruits, fat bunches of lemongrass and live mud crabs. With bargains at every stall, it’s an assault on your senses, not your wallet.
